My Review:

I was really looking forward to reading this book, I enjoyed the first one and was looking forward to seeing what Evan and Claire were up to next. I really enjoyed these characters in the first book and I was excited to see how they had grown since then. I believe that was when I realized my problem with this book. As much as Evan had grown in the last book this one he was just not my favorite at all and really got on my nerves.

I love H.B. Botlon’s writing style and her knowledge and research she puts into this book to give you so much myth and legend within the story. The picture she paints of Sagaas is fantastic and the world she creates within it. I was looking forward to exploring more and learning about the creatures that live within it.

I enjoyed this story, This time Evan and Claire have to stop Mica, the Coyote Trickster, and get him back into the Trickster Totem. We meet a few new characters and still have the pleasure of hanging with our stinky friend Dunkle, the imp. I honestly loved all the creatures they encountered and even Bigfoot. I really think what got me was how frustrated I was with Evan and how annoyed everyone was with him. Claire was still a very strong character and she did a bit more growing in this book. I enjoyed all the new characters, however I missed Sigurd or Lazonia (they aren’t in it, fingers crossed they are in the next one). This time we meet a Native American Chayton, a Mermaid Amadahy and a Dragon Khel they all help Evan and Claire on this quest to get the Totem back and capture Mica. I am hoping that the next book brings all these characters together or at least some of them. The end is a bit of a cliffhanger and it seems that we might be in for the final battle…maybe?

This book would have been great if it wasn’t for Evan (I hope he’s not like that in the next book). Since the story is in his POV it’s hard not to get frustrated. I gave it 3.5 stars not because I didn’t like the story just that I had a disconnect with the characters but that won’t stop me from reading the next one in the series. I am actually really looking forward to it. 🙂

  1. Hmmm I’m really curious about this series – you know I don’t read a lot of Middle Grade, but there’s something about this that makes me think Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and I did really like those, so maybe…

  2. I hate to say it, but I’m smiling right now because of your frustration with Evan. But I mean it in the best way possible. Before starting the book, I struggled with how Evan should behave. In the end, I thought of how arrogant Peter was in The Prince of Caspian (Chronicles of Narnia). After everything Peter the Magnificent had gone through, how was he supposed to return to being an ordinary kid? So, yes, Evan is a bit of a know-it-all in The Trickster’s Totem and he allowed his achievements in The Serpent’s Ring go to his head a bit … or a lot. But don’t worry, he’s been knocked down a peg or two and straightens out in The Dragon’s Egg 🙂
