4 Star #Review ~ #MyTBRL Bone Crier’s Moon (Bone Grace, #1) by Kathryn Purdie

So if you remember the book that originally won this month TBR was Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold. Maybe I am unaware of her style of writing or how she tells a story but it was a huge NOPE for me. The first 7% was about this girls period, in full detail and I was pretty much done. I have my own problems I didn’t need to read about hers. So I marked it DNF and instead of skipping the month I decided to read the second winner. I am kind of glad I did.

I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Bone Criers have a sacred duty. They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living. But their power to ferry the spirits of the dead into goddess Elara’s Night Heavens or Tyrus’s Underworld comes from sacrifice. The gods demand a promise of dedication. And that promise comes at the cost of the Bone Criers’ one true love.

Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, a mysterious famille of women who use strengths drawn from animal bones to ferry dead souls. But first she must complete her rite of passage and kill the boy she’s also destined to love.

Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier and he’s been seeking revenge ever since. Yet when he finally captures one, his vengeance will have to wait. Ailesse’s ritual has begun and now their fates are entwined—in life and in death.

Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work. But when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means defying their traditions—and their matriarch—to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.

Since this book isn’t out until March 2020 I really don’t want to give a lot away. I thought the beginning of this book was so interesting and I loved the characters. The middle sort of slowed down and was rather repetitive but the end I wasn’t expecting. Like I am almost mad I read this so early because now it will be FOREVER until the next book will be out.

  • The story is told in 3 POVs. I will be honest sometimes I was getting a little confused and I liked reading Sabine POV the best.
  • The book has heavy romance. I was hopping it would be a little more fantasy and a lot less romance, I believe that was what was slowing me down in the middle.
  • Regardless I really did like Bastian and Ailesse.
  • The story itself was interesting but I did get a little confused at times because I felt like each character has something going on and it started to get a little disjointed. While it does come back around closer to the end, the middle for me was just a bit messy.
  • One part I thought was very anticlimactic, sort of didn’t come together like I wanted.

Overall, I liked the book, while the middle had me a little off, the end really pulled me in. If what happens at the end didn’t happen I might not have given 4 stars and I might not have wanted to read the next book. I really did enjoy the characters and would love to see how their stories continue and end. Totally recommend! 🙂
