Almost everybody has sat down beside a campfire at some point in their lives and shared an idea, a story, a longing, gazing up at a sweep of stars.

There’s something about that setting, Something about the way it brings us together, huddling for warmth, while words and worlds spill out of us and mingle with the sparks and embers.

It was no different for me. That was where the first few fragile ideas for my book came from. Sat by a fire, talking with my friends.

Now I write wherever I can. I’m a paper and pen addict. You might find me leaning against a lamp post, frantically scribbling on a crumpled napkin, or hiding behind the bike shed at work, where the spiders are biggest but then so is the peace. Or maybe you’ll see me strolling along the seafront, happily mumbling to myself…

Take the chances where you can.

Write and write and write until the idea is done and ready and shared!

And pull up a hay bale. Let me tell you a tale about the stars

Goodreads

The Boy Who Spoke to Stars is the first book in a trilogy about death, secrets and forgiveness.

When Kasper and Loki’s parents vanish in a series of bizarre circumstances it is up to them to discover the truth about their disappearance. As they set off into the night, they have no way of knowing how the secrets they are about to uncover will change not only their lives, but the fate of every living thing in the universe…

This debut novel from Ben Miles is a coming of age story for Young Adults, with touches of fantasy.

Somewhere in the dark the truth is waiting. And the stars are watching.

A Chat with the Author

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in London until my parents decided that they needed fresher air. We bundled ourselves up and drove to Devon, which is in the South West of UK. It is a beautiful but sleepy part of the world. By the time I left home I was aching for adventure. I now find myself living in Brighton, which is the most flamboyant, diverse and wonderful city in the country. I’ve been here for six years now and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

I’m a dog person. Dogs beat cats any day. If you think otherwise, you’re wrong! I have a cross-bred Collie/Afghan Hound. He’s fast as lightning and daft as two planks. He’s bloody fantastic.

2. Can you tell us about the characters in your book?

I don’t believe in good characters or bad characters. We all have a bit of light and dark in us. I like to show this with everyone I write about. The two protagonists are Kasper and Loki. They’ve both had things happen to them in the past that would be a fair excuse for giving up on life. But neither is willing to do that. They fight and struggle. They make mistakes, but they keep trying. I don’t think anyone would be interested in reading about someone who gets knocked down and refuses to stand up again.

3. What made you want to write a book?

A pathological sadistic streak.

When I set out to write THE BOY WHO SPOKE TO STARS, I had no idea what a vast and all-consuming task it would become. It has been an obsessive, glorious, maddening, surprising, staggering and laughable two years, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Would I do it all again? Absolutely. (Which I guess is a relief seeing as there are still two books to go before the story is fully told!)

4. How do you come up with the characters names?

I did a lot of research about stars for the book, and several of the names I picked have grounding in the mythology that surrounds them. Other characters (Like Charlie Dupin) are nods to some of my favorite writers. I’ll leave you to figure out which ones they are.

5. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Write every day. Read every day. Get someone mean to help edit. Eat your greens.
