Real Life & Blog News:

Did you know Hermit Crabs Molt? I didn’t either but let me tell you aΒ  traumatizing story that is hilarious (at least to me). We have 3 Hermit Crabs in one tank. Leonardo, Spiderman and Flyra. Flyra is my daughters hermit crab from when we went to Wildwood in August. The hermit clan are BFF’s and have tank meeting about me every once in a while (seriously). Well two weeks ago I went into the tank, after taking Julia to school, to check on them all and Flyra has the grey look and sort of fell out of her shell. I was in a PANIC, OMG It’s dying. I put it on the counter and texted my husband with a bunch of panic emails of OMG she is dying, What do I do, Julia is going to be upset. I kept checking on her and she was moving but barely, so I wrapped her in a papertowel and figured I would wait till she died then figure out what to do. I checked on her again and she was super grayish and her eyes had lost the black. I was so sad, I slowly grabbed her to pull her from the shell and when I gave a little tug her entire outer skin came off and she retracted back in the shell. I SCREAMED! OMG SHE’S ALIVE but HOLY SHIT, I RIPPED OFF HER SKIN!!!! I then realized maybe she is molting? Wait, Do Hermit Crabs molt? Well, Yes they do, I just helped her along. Not sure if that was a good thing or not. I should have read the article a little more but I put her back in the tank, in their little house, to rest until her outer skin hardens again. Thank goodness she wasn’t dead. However she needed to be isolated because at some point in the middle of the night she got out of her shell and the other little shit Leonardo jumped out of his shell and into hers. I woke up to a now NAKED Flyra in the tank, all day, I need to protect her because she was still soft. So I loomed over the tank all day to keep an eye on her. She eventually got into Leo’s old shell and now they switched. Not confusing at all. Thank goodness I noticed. So she has been pretty good since then….Until Monday….

The Tank
The Tank

If you are still reading this god bless you but this is what happened this week.

I saw her Sunday night in the shell (it’s shaped like a turtle, super cute) and put her in the little yellow house since she seems so depressed and still her skin is hardening. Monday morning she was still in the house, I went to work. When I got home I checked on her again just for whatever reason and opened the tank and took the house off of her and looking in the shell….SHE WAS GONE! I looked in all the other shells, NO FLYRA, OMG is she naked again under the dirt? I took everything out moved the other two crabs and…NO FLYRA. OMG DID THEY EAT HER? DO THEY EAT EACH OTHER? but there was no trace of her at all? What happened to her. I had to get the kids and explain to Julia that Houdini disappeared and I couldn’t find her. I checked all the empty shells again and moved some stuff again but found nothing, I go get the kids.

Big Shell, Little hermit Crab

I explained to Julia that I was so sorry, I had no idea what happened to her and made up a story of this happening sometimes. She was upset but took it better than I was. For the next two hours I sat trying to figure out HOW this hermit crab disappeared, I check every place. I was so confused. Just for the hell of it let me just check again. So I got a bright lamp and inspected everything in the tank, I went through each shell looking inside and Son of a Bitch there she was. In the biggest friggin shell she could be in. It’s so big she doesn’t even fit in it and I didn’t see her at all. I SCREAMED! SHE’S ALIVE….again.

So I am happy to report Flyra is just fine, As far as me, I need a vacation or a really big glass of wine. These hermit crabs are going to kill me πŸ™‚

The rest of the week thank goodness has been rather quiet but the weather took a turn for the worse and it’s FREEZING.

Spent most of the weekend doing nothing but reading and blogging, my favorite kind of weekend πŸ™‚

Last year I mentions a birthday wall for my son, if you don’t remember I have a wall in our house that I decorate in the morning on one of the kids birthdays, they look forward to it and I have been doing it for 10 years now. I was quite proud of this years wall I made for my son. I did this all by myself, even I was impressed with my mad drawing skills πŸ™‚

I kind of went one click crazy but for a good reason, I have my 2015 Reading Assignment books are all physical books but I found 5 of them on sale for .99 so I got the kindle version because I find it easier to read and now I don’t have to ruin the books since they are all signed books. I am going to be lazy and just list them with links to goodreads πŸ™‚

  1. HAHAHA! Hermit crabs sound so fun! That’s too funny! I did know that they molt, but I probably still would have freaked out the first time. And OF COURSE she would hide in the biggest shell! That’s like when we can’t find Odette, because she’s curled up in the middle of the floor, in the wiiiiide open, but she’s the same color as the floor. LoL

  2. You are so funny! We had hermit crabs a couple years ago. There was one year when they were really popular and sold at the mall in huge displays, so we knew about them shedding and moving in to new shells. I remember they sold all these really pretty shells for you to buy and we got some just in case it happened. But it’s good to hear you found her and I hope she is ok now. That was an exciting and stressful day so I hope you now get to relax and enjoy your new books. Have a great week!

  3. Oh my God who knew Hermit crabs could be so stressful! I had no idea! I would’ve needed a nap and some wine as well but glad all are okay. I absolutely love the idea of the birthday wall. I can’t draw to save my life but I think I could do something cool. Thanks for the great idea! Now I hope you don’t mind if I borrow it. Have a great week and enjoy your new books. I’m especially curious about Flunked.

  4. Bahahaha! I shouldn’t laugh at your hermit crab (mis)adventures, but you tell the stories so well! I would have died if it had been me. I would be right there with you, completely freaking the hell out! I knew they switched shells, but not that they molt. Good info to have, I suppose πŸ˜‰

You are so artistic. I love the birthday wall for the kids. It’s a nice tradition you’ve got happening there. And I’m looking forward to the apps you can’t live without post. Have a great (QUIETER) week, Michelle <3

    • lol they are interesting creature, fun to watch but since we got them I am like a basket case lol

Thank you! They love the wall and I love doing it for them. It’s like a thing now, my husband is sad I wont do it for him, I told him he’s not my kid even though he acts like one πŸ˜‰

  5. First of all the crab story is hilarious- who knew? Switching shell and all that- that’s crazy. πŸ™‚ Glad you survived. That’s too much, I would definitely need some wine (or a shot, more like). And the Mario wall cool!

Have a great weekend- and watch out for crabs!

Oh my goodness, who knew hermit crabs were so much work! I sort of knew they molted but not that they’d trade shells. πŸ˜€ I’d have been panicking too. Is your heart still working? πŸ˜›

Flunked looks cute and funny, happy reading!

    • Oh they trade shells a lot, we watched one get out of a shell and then get back in another one. Plus we have another one not in the tank with them because he tries to take them out of their shells. He is slightly obsessed. So he has his own shells in a cage by himself.

Flunked is turning out to be very cute πŸ™‚

  7. HaHa! Oh my goodness. Thanks for sharing your story. I could imagine your panic though. I had hermit crabs as a kid. I could never keep them alive because they would grow and then they wouldn’t like the shells I bought them. Maybe I had primadonna crabs and they wanted bejeweled shells and all I had were generic natural looking shells. Glad to hear they are all doing well. LoL Definitely have a big ol glass of wine. You deserve it.

    • They are a lot harder to take care of then I thought. They need water every day otherwise they die and it needs to be very warm and humid. They don’t die when they fall out of the shell that could be molting (wont tell you how many we think may not have been dead oops) I have a bunch of shells in the cage with them so they can switch when they want all different kinds and sizes

Having a glass of wine soon πŸ™‚

  8. Your adventures with the crab really made me laugh – I’m sorry for that, I understand you must have been panicky at the time ! A birthday wall, what a good idea, I’m glad your son loved it. Have a great week, a nice and relaxing one πŸ˜‰

  9. I hate to point this out to you, but I don’t think Flya is molting. I think the hermit crabs were just playing hide-n-seek. I’m sorry it wasn’t as obvious for you. πŸ˜‰ LOL But OMG I loved that post! I read the entire hermit crab story LOL.

I loved your story about Flyra!! It was hilarious and I learnt so much about hermit crabs πŸ˜›
Thanks for the quick lesson hahah, new follower here! Also, the birthday wall is amazing and what a great idea!
I am curious to see what you think of Flunked, I will be looking out for your review πŸ™‚

Hope you enjoy your books this week! πŸ™‚

  11. Oh I had to laugh about your whole story abou the hermit crabs, wow what a story. Pets can really give you a scare sometimes. I mentioned to my boyfriend that hermit crabs molt and he wasn’t surprised, he even mentioned they apparently often eat their old skin as it contains nutrients.
I am happy everything seems okay with Fyra, but wow you must have gotten quite the scare when you thought she had disapared. And I had to smile about the crabs switching shells, it sounded fun, do they normally always stay in the same shell?

And nice work on the birthday wall, you have great drawing skills indeed. I hope your son liked it.

Lola recently posted: Sunday Post #113
    • Yes they do eat it but I had already ripped it off and threw it away because I was in such a panic lol.
They don’t stay in the same shell as they get bigger they switch shells and sometimes just switch shells for the heck of it, which is why I have so many shells in the tank just incase. We have another hermit crab but he is by himself in a cage since he has shell issues. He likes to rip them off of other crabs, hes a bully, so he is by himself, his name is Meanie πŸ™‚

Thank you! and Thanks for stopping by! oxox

  12. OH my goodness, MIchelle, your hermit crab adventures are hilarious! At least to me, because I didn’t have to frantically search for Flyra in the tank and inside all those shells πŸ˜€ I’m glad everything worked out great in the end.

The Birthday wall is amazing, I’m glad your son enjoyed it so much.

Have a fantastic week and happy reading.

    • It was 2 hours of total confusion because even if they eat her, they would have left bits and no bits! Why couldn’t my kids want something normal like a hamster. We already have a dog and cat so hamsters are cute! lol

Thank you! The kids LOVED it so that is what really counted and I was happy it came out so nice. It’s hard to draw in the dark at 10pm πŸ™‚
