What I thought
Well, as some know I don’t review DNF which means yes, The Burning Sky, I bailed out on. I just couldn’t do it anymore. It was one of those books I really wanted to like but just couldn’t. Do you know when I bailed? 78% yes almost finished and I just couldn’t get myself to want to finish it.
This book was picked by you and I LOVE this new interaction for My To-Be Read list because when things like this happen it’s awesome because this would have sat on my TBR list forever and now I know and it’s no longer on my list.
I was so bummed as I was getting into this book that it wasn’t going how I expected it to go. I think that was my biggest problem. What I thought was a Mage who was protected by a handsome prince set out to defeat a mean villain. What I got was a Mage and Prince spending a lot of time at a school talking about defeating a villain who never was once in the book only his name. I also think this was supposed to be a love story but they talked about liking each other but I just didn’t really care at all.
The explanation of the world of Mage and Nonmage was interesting, you might remember a similar world in Harry Potter but Harry Potter was done a lot better. Plus this was set in really life 1800s England which I found rather weird since it lacked world build or even a solid explanation of a world. Some of the information about the world, mages and what was going on was really confusing. The entire time I was waiting for this epic fight, good against evil, an all powerful elemental mage that can control fire, lightening, water and air……78% and I was still waiting.
I honestly wanted to like this books really I did and once in a while I thought I might but then realized I didn’t. Regardless of my feelings I always recommend books and maybe this would be something that works for you but it just DID NOT work for me.
I don’t rate books I don’t finish this is just a DNF for me.

I usually stop reading a book when theres too many characters to follow and they don’t fit into the story
I think characters need to mesh together, to many can get confusing
If out of nowhere an author decides to have a million different characters with no back story or extra information.
If a book embarrasses me with too much sex or repulses me with too much violence it’s a DNF for me.
I choose to put the book down when I realize that I am looking for anything to do to distract myself from having to drag through the book.

I’m sorry you didn’t like it, it seemed so good. It’s been on my TBR, too, but I’m not sure if I still want to read it, especially because of the lacking of world building.
Recently, a very similar situation happened to me; I posted my first DNF review on my blog. I rarely DNF a book and if I do I either don’t review it (most cases) or only on Goodreads (1 case), but that book was something I really wanted to like and it didn’t work out and I ended up sharing it.
I DNF occasionally, sometimes a book just isn’t working. This one the description sounds really good, I like the elemental idea- but if she never gets to any of that stuff, I can see it being very disappoiting. Might as well spend your time on something you like!

Aw, sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. I personally loved this one, but I just love all things fantasy xD As for what makes me DNF, well any number of things actually. If I’m not in the mood, the pacing is off, the characters are annoying me too much, the plot holes are too glaring, too much angst…You get the point lol. Yes, I do DNF quite a bit lmao.
Honesty counts. You put so much work into these books and your passion for literature shines through.

Well I try to finish a book but if it doesn’t pick up by the middle at least then I might, I might skim it.
I also try very hard to finish the book. I was acutally trying to skim it but it was so confusing you have to read every word and it still was confusing Lol. Skimming wouldn’t have saved this one 🙂
Sad to hear you didn’t like this book, it sounded good and I like the cover. I have been DNF’ing books a bit more lately. Just like you I don’t rate books I DNF. Any reason from the story doesn’t grab me or I can’t connect to the character can make me DNf a book or often a combination of things like that. I also hate confusing books or books with bad world building. I hope your next read will be better!
It did sound good, just not what I expected. Its sad how many I have been DNF’ing it’s making me nervous lol but I finally found one I am enjoying now 🙂
I don’t often have DNF books. One bad instance is Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore. I just don’t think it was the right book at the right time. I still have it and want to finish it someday, but maybe later.
I thought at that with this one since I was up to 78% maybe if i ever have a chance I will try and finish it.
Aw, sucks that this one didn’t work out for you. I’m still curious about it, but now I’m a little wary because I’m all about the world building! Hmm.
I’ve never had a DNF. There have only been a couple of books that I wanted to throw across the room because of their awfulness, but I finished them.
I try so hard to finish a book but the last few I just really could not get through 🙂
