#Review ~ Young Houdini: the Demon Curse by Simon Nicholson

Harry and friends are back and I was rather excited about this book. I read the first one and enjoyed the characters a lot but had thought the story was a touch slow so I was hoping this one would have more build on each character and the action would move along at a better pace. The book starts off where the last left off, I like that the action/adventure started right at the beginning and I thought the characters build was a bit more at least with Billie. I still however thought the pace was a touch slow and at times the story was becoming very confusing, it was hard to keep up. I am not really sure if it all made a lot of sense to me. I think that is also what happened when I read the first book. I think younger kids might be able to follow along but I think as an adult I was looking for more depth and more magic from Harry. I still feel like it’s lacking what Houdini did and his great escapes. Harry reminds me more of Sherlock Holmes than Houdini.

This would be a great read for MG or Younger kids, it has very likable characters. I think my confusion came more from wanting more depth, it just seemed simple. The story didn’t flow like I think it should. As much as this is a fun book to read I am not sure I will continue with this series. However it does have a lot of fun moments just don’t think it worked that well for me.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my review.

Have a great day and Happy Reading!

  1. It’s nice the book started off with action and adventure already. Too bad this one was a bit slow and confusing. The title seems to be a bit misleading if this is more Sherlock Holmes than Houdini, i would’ve expected big escapes as well. And indeed maybe it will work great for kids who don’t mind if it’s a bit simple. Great review!

  2. I can see how less complexity would be good for MG readers, especially the lower level ones who’s comprehension is still weak. This would be a great way for them to read books that don’t announce to their peers they are behind, but make it comprehensible for them. Too bad it wasn’t great for you though 🙁
