News at Home: Checking in 🙂

I’m trying not to be AS absent as I have been – even if it is just a Sunday Post every week. Some updates for you…

I got back some test results and for the most part things are looking good for week 29 of pregnancy. My gestational diabetes test came back perfect, which was such a relief. With my history of obesity I was very nervous about it. However, my platelets are low and I’ve lost 8 pounds in the past month. Neither is a great sign, but my doctor isn’t worried about either YET. She said we need to keep a close eye on both. She’s ordered an ultrasound for Monday July 8th to check his growth, to make sure my weight loss hasn’t impacted him. And if, at that point, my weight hasn’t at least stabilized and I’m continuing to have bad nausea, she’s going to put me on meds for it. So fingers crossed I don’t lose weight (never thought I’d say that sentence!).

I made a final decision on our doula this week and I feel really good about it – and even the cost is decent – so that’s one thing on the checklist down. I have an appointment with a pediatrician scheduled for a couple weeks out, which is also a huge relief to have off the checklist. I got signed up for birthing classes (they start the 10th) as well as breastfeeding classes. I still need to decide if I’m going to take the infant care class. And even though I am already CPR certified, I think I’m going to take the infant CPR class since all my practice has been for adults.

Other than all the decision making, I’ve been very VERY lazy this week. I haven’t put away the laundry from last week’s laundry mat run yet…. will get it done tonight (Saturday). It’s just so HOT. This is an unusual complaint for me, I usually love our summer heat. But it’s not fun pregnant. I get dehydrated so easy. So I just finished binge watching My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. OMG so good! And now I’m either going back to my binge of Big Bang Theory – I’m on season 4 or 5 – or starting a new series. Can’t decide. Was feeling nostalgic and musical (thanks in part to My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend I think) so I watched The Sound of Music this week as well. It’s still such a wonderful, beautiful film.

Oh and I’ve started doing some work learning more about coding, because y’all, I’ve officially hit my breaking point with the education field. Over the past month I’ve gotten emails from my district first notifying us that our premiums are going to be increasing a lot yet again (TX laws haven’t required school districts to increase the amount they subsidize on our health plans since like 2005!) and then this week that the $5000 raise that was supposedly passed in TX Congress has some loopholes in it and yeah, we’re not getting it. So once again, my pay raise won’t cover the increase in my premiums and I my take home pay will be less this year than it was last year, which was less than it was the year before, and so on on and so on. This is not the way working is supposed to be. You don’t make LESS as you improve and gain experience, you earn more! And I’ve not only had amazing performance reviews, but I freaking won several awards, including a Teacher of the Year award this year! It breaks my heart, because I love what I do and really feel like I’m making a difference for the kids I teach, but I have to take care of my family. I’m worth so much more than I make and I can make it if I leave education. So I’m working on it and this may be my last year as a teacher. Maybe second-to-last.

I think that’s it for my week… I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Blog News

So I’m trying to at least be consistent with these Sunday Posts. My goal this week is to spend some time updating my goodreads so that it’s accurate again. I haven’t been reading a whole lot of fun books. It’s all pregnancy related these days! But I have still been listening to the Read Me Romance podcast. And I think my brain could use a break from pregnancy, so I might pick up some fun reading again this week. I hope to try and visit y’all again today and maybe next week I’ll be ready to start posting some reviews….? We’ll see!

  1. Good to hear the pregnancy is still going well. Hopefully no more weight loss, though! So crazy that you’re making less each year instead of more. So much for being recognized (and PAID) for hard work and dedication. I swear, it’s criminal. Fact is, you have to take care of you and your family and they’re not making that possible (or at least no easy). Shameful.

  2. Glad the diabetes checck went good and hopefully all will go well even with the weight loss. Yeah for getting things done off your list. Bummer about the rates going up like that and affecting your take home pay. It’s not happening to teacher here in Michigan so I’m sad that its hitting elsewhere. Good on you to have a proactive plan in place.
Hope you get to enjoy some light fun reading this week, Berls!

  3. I’m so sorry that you’re effectively being driven out of a career you love. Take home pay here isn’t keeping up with the rising cost of living either and it’s a huge problem.
I wish you luck with not losing any weight! lol

  4. It is so sad to hear about you thinking of you no longer teaching. You see it so much. So much teacher turnover. I understand why teachers leave. I just wish we would (as a country) take care of our teachers. It is such a great investment into children and the future of this country. Good luck learning a new career while pregnant. That sounds like so much work, but I’m sure you can do it.
