Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going.Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.
I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…
Would you read a book by your favourite author if it isn’t in a genre you normally enjoy?
Sure, I’d at least try it. Favorite authors tend to become favorites because of their ability to create characters that are complex and that I love (or love to hate!) and because of their ability to tell a compelling story. That doesn’t automatically disappear when we switch genres. That said, we also love certain genres because we appreciate certain things we can count on to be there or not be there. So, it’s very possible that they remain great at their craft but their genre shift just doesn’t do it for me.
What really helps though, is that I read pretty much every genre. I horror and sci-fi I’m very picky about because they aren’t my “thing” but I have several in both genres I enjoy. And I’ve drifted away from YA and Historical Romances in recent years, but they’ve been favorites and I’m still very open to reading them!
You mentioned the author’s voice, and yeah, I’m sure their writing would still be enjoyable…but unlike you, I have genres that I really don’t enjoy (mainly romance, high fantasy, historical), so even if it pains me, I can’t follow them in those bookish adventures 🙂.
Exactly, their writing voice is good so it will likely still be good in a different genre. I, too, enjoy more than one fiction genre so crossing to another usually isn’t an issue.
What you said! My answer was all ramble-y, but I agree with everything you’ve written here so much.

I agree, favorite authors have earned that spot and with my fairly wide reading palette, I’ll probably follow along. Unless I’m swamped and buried under my TBR!
It all depends tbh
yes same. I read favorite authors even into other genres.
I don’t. I read paranormal romance and sometimes cowboy romance. I will read contemporary romance at times if the story sounds good enough. But I have a favorite author who also writes historical romance and I don’t read those because I really don’t like historical romance for the most part.
I do! I like when authors stretch a bit and try new things.

I would definitely read a book by a favorite author even if it’s in a genre I don’t normally enjoy. I try to have an open mind about most genres and am an eclectic reader in general. You never know, right?
