Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going.Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.
I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…
How do you like to be scared? Horror? Thriller?
For the longest time, my answer to this question was plain and simple – “I don’t like to be scared.” But I’ve gown 😉
I’m not touching Horror with a 10 foot pole. But I’ll pick up a suspense / thriller from time to time. Sometimes I even find myself really wanting to read one. To me there is one essential difference in Horror vs Thriller.
Horror, you gotta run and fight your way out. Violence is the answer against these scary monsters. And yeah, that doesn’t work for me. I’d lose. And I just don’t love the blood and gore.
Thriller, you have to use your brain. It’s strategy, out thinking the bad guy and not falling for his tricks. Not that I’m a genius – far from it – but with the brains strategy I have a chance. And I enjoy testing my brain a lot more than reading the blood and gore. So I choose thriller.
I like both horror and thrillers but if I had to choose one it would be HORROR! 😉
No horror. I don’t read either genre. But I do like books that have suspense – like I remember reading Jurassic Park back 30 years ago and I was constantly “OMG” because I was so worried and “scared” what would happen next. But not scary… suspenseful.
I like how you distinguish why you prefer one over the other. I’m not big on being scared and thrillers aren’t the same level of scare-factor for me. But the intellectual side of getting to the end is a good reason, too. 🙂

Ha! I’m a fan of classic mysteries (Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, John Dickson Carr, Rex Stout), and I enjoy testing my brain as well. But I don’t know…modern thrillers work better on TV than on paper for me. At the same time, while I don’t go out of my way to read horror, I read the kind of books that come with a side of horror (afterlife, supernatural, sci-fi), and I’ve gotten used to blood and gore through the years (I couldn’t stand the sight of…pretty much anything bloody when I was a teen). So, who knows – maybe you’ll find yourself reading some slightly tamer horror as well one day 😉.
Maybe! I mean, I read suspense when I once thought I wouldn’t consider it. So who knows, it’s possible!
