Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going.Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.
I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…
Do you read middle grade books? Why or why not?
I don’t. I have tried a few times and they really just don’t hold my interest as a rule. In fact, according to my Goodreads shelves, I’ve read 10 Middle Grade books. I doubt that is 100% accurate, but it’s probably not too far off. And that includes marking some of the early Harry Potter books as Middle Grade. As a rule, they just don’t hold my interest. Obviously there have been some outliers (Harry Potter), but I tend to find the problems in the books underwhelming and I guess I just don’t tend to enjoy being in the mind of that age group. To be fair, I also tend to struggle with Young Adult when the characters are immature or it’s not Fantasy (which tends to provide a complex world/plot). But I will read them on strong review/recommendation and have been pleasantly surprised a couple times.
It’s not a genre I seek out at all but I’ve had a few sent my way that I really enjoy. And I guess I’ve managed to get the few that were complex (within the target age of course).

I don’t read MG books for similar reasons; however, I did when my kids were in elementary. I bet you will be too in a few years. 🙂
I don’t usually read that genre. It’s just not my thing.
Mmmmm. I think sometimes I might? When I was in Middle School I rarely read Middle School level books. I was always reaching for more adult books lol
MG books isn’t the majority of my reading but my favorite book of all time just happens to be a MG book, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer!
