Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going. Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.
I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…
Do you tend to enjoy spin off series? Or are you hesitant about them?
I am hesitant about them, for sure. If I love the original, I am eager to try the spin off for sure. But my track record is not so great. In general, I tend to have a hard time with spin offs. Maybe my expectations are too high because of the original? Just this past year with the Night Huntress Readalong, for example, I was so INCREDIBLY disappointed with the Vlad spin off series. But I did enjoy a couple of the Night Huntress World books, so the spin offs weren’t all a miss. Which is exactly why I do keep trying spin offs – some work. But yeah, most have been underwhelming for me.
I seem to jump in on the spin off series rather than the original. And then I worry if I missed something by my reading the original. It’s all about timing for me, unfortunately–or fortunately. I am loving Chloe Neill’s Heirs of Chicagoland series, but have never read the series it is spun off of, for example. Maybe someday I will go back and read the Chicagoland Vampire series. The references to it in the new series make me want to at least.
“I was so INCREDIBLY disappointed with the Vlad spin off series.” THIS – 100%!!! This is why I didn’t pick up the Ian series. I felt like I was the only one who didn’t like the Vlad series.
Usually spinoffs are decent – especially if they are continuations of the original, like Psy-Changeling.
Now there are 2 of us lol! Seriously, I felt like the only one too. I’m actually currently reading and loving the Ian series — so you may want to consider it! I’ll see after I finish the 3rd one if it ends well, but so far it’s 5 stars for the first two books!
I usually like spin-offs, but it can be hard sometimes when I have high expectations or when a spin-off series goes into a different direction or vibe as the first series. Luckily my track record with them has been good so far and I usually enjoy them.
I don’t mind a spin off because the characters from the original series pop back up from time to time and I like that.
But Ian and Psy-Changeling Trinity are awesome. And the new Kate Daniels Wilmington years is perfection.
For me it all depends.
