It’s time for a Q&A

I am so very happy to have Holly Goldberg Sloan & Meg Wolitzer on the blog today. I got the chance to read the book and think it will be such a great book for all ages. I am so glad we get this chance to talk.

1.   So let’s start,  What made you want to write this story?

HGS: We wanted to work together. We wanted to write about young girls. We wanted to make people laugh, but also feel something.

MW: It was exciting to think about sharing a book project with a good friend. Both of us felt very invested in writing something that felt real and also funny, with characters who felt like we knew them.

2.  It was very funny….What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing this book?

HGS: Epistolary novels are a lot trickier than you think! There is a great deal of finessing to keep the thing going.

MW: Just because you have a second writer doesn’t mean the book will be easier or much quicker to write. There is still a lot of work to do.

3.  I know i enjoy reading on my comfy couch but When you are writing do you have a favorite spot to go?

HGS: I write sitting on the bed.

MW:  I write on the bed as well, and sometimes in a coffee shop in New York City, where I live.

4.  I try so hard to stay organized….What is your writing process, how do you organize before starting a new story?

HGS: There is a lot of thinking that goes on in an unconscious way. Both of us start with character. We build out from there.

MW: I like to have a strong sense of what I’m writing about, and right away the characters definitely become the way through.

5.  Character build is important….If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?

HGS: Wear sunscreen. Know that you will develop an allergy to tuna fish. Ask your grandparents a lot of questions about their lives–they won’t always be around to answer.  Don’t worry about chemistry class. Keep in touch with people you care about. Buy stock in Starbucks and Apple.

MW: Don’t be so self-conscious; you are probably thinking about yourself a lot more than other people are thinking about you. Be who you are, and don’t worry.

6.  Some of those I think I might tell myself now….We need to know about books you love….If you could recommend one book for someone to read (not your own) which one would you pick?

HGS: The Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

MW: Charlotte’s Web by EB White.

7.   Those are great picks…We want to know a little more about you….Share something your readers don’t know about you?

HGS:  Readers may not know that when I was little, I told everyone that when I grew up I wanted to be the president of the United States.  This would cause people to roar with laughter. I’m still waiting for a woman to get the job done. But clearly it won’t be me.

MW: I am a big Scrabble player. I play all the time, online and in real life. I love it.

8.  I love those fun facts…..What do you like to do when you are not writing?

HGS: My favorite things to do are go for hikes. Swim in the ocean. Work in the garden. And cook something wonderful.

MW: Play Scrabble, sing, cook, and walk around the city listening to music.

9.  You both are awesome! Now for the most important question….What topping do you like on your Ice Cream?

HGS:  Hot fudge

MW: Hot fudge (naturally)
