Was it good for you? ~ Hope’s Reign

WIGFU1Every couple of months Berls @ Fantasy is more fun and I take a look at our very long To Be Read shelves and select a book that we both want to read. And then we read it and chat about it. We’ve changed it up a bit to make it simpler. Instead of a lengthy chat, we’re interviewing each other on our respective blogs and asking – Was it good for you?

Ok, so I know you forced me to finish this book ๐Ÿ˜‰ and you did struggle in the beginning. What was the point that turned you around to want to finish? (without spoilers if you can)

Berls

It did take me a while to get into, mostly because I wasn’t sure what the point was. Once Hope showed up and I started hatting Hayes I was onboard. At that point I saw the problems and couldn’t wait to see how they’d be resolved.

Michelle

We really went a long time before reading this one. Did that effect how you like this book? Or did your Memory get refreshed after a few chapters? (pun intended)

Berls

LOL! My memories took longer than I would have liked to reconnect. I think that’s also why I had a hard time getting into it. I didn’t see the plot as quickly because I didn’t recognize the big elements. I think I would have liked it more and faster if there was a better recap or I just had a better memory.

What was it that you liked most about this book? Was it better than the first?

Berls

Better than the first? No. Different im good ways? Yes. I always love books with court intrigue and political plotting, so that’s what I loved about this one. And having a character to firmly hate. That’s always awesome. Hayes got under my skin like Umbridge in Harry Potter.

You know how much I love the Illustrations, Does that help you while reading this book? Which one was your favorite?

Berls

God I love the illustrations! I always pause whenever we get to one and examine it. I try to guess what’s going to happen based on them sometimes. And they make visualizing so easy. My favorite picture? I’m torn between two, both towards the end. (insert pictures here) The first because it’s beautiful in its feeling of loss and desperation. The second because its one of my favorite moments. I wanted to cry a bit.

The story got a lot better by the end. I know you grabbed the next book to read right away. If you didn’t have the next book already where you happy with how this one ended? Would you have grabbed the next as soon as it came out? or would you have waited?

Berls

I was very happy with how this one ended. I mean it is slightly cliff-hanger-ish but there’s some resolution and I liked where things were headed. It would have been a book I was watching out for, since I was really excited to see how the next phase would go. I’m particularly interested in Providence and the Fae. I’m a Fae fan so I was excited that the next one seemed to promise lots of Fae (and I was right! Loving book 3!)

  1. I love that this story had illustrations! Its been I don’t know how long since I read a book (that wasn’t a graphic novel) that had illustrations! Glad this book seemed to get better towards the end ๐Ÿ™‚ Not sure I have the patience for this one, though. Plus I haven’t read book one lmao

    • Once I read the next one I might have a different view, I think this series would work best in you read it all in one shot. It’s not awful but the second book being slow just kind of hurt it for me. I have my fingers crossed for the next one that it will wrap everything up in a nice bow.

  2. How fun that I actually read both of your reviews yesterday and now reading this post. It’s nice to see the similarities and differences in your opinion of the book. Like how you both thought the beginning was a bir slow and would’ve liked a bit more recap and the ending was much better, but I felt like Berl did enjoy the book in general more. Oh and I am so happy you included some artwork here as you both mentioned it in your review and I was curious what it would look like.
