Newly indoctrinated witch, and a charmling to boot, Defiance Dayne discovers there's more to life after forty than she'd ever imagined possible. Especially since one neighbor is trying to seduce her, another neighbor is trying to steal her house out from under her, and a third neighbor is trying to get her kicked off the planet. Oh for three, but things start to look up when a new witch moves to town, one who says she's been sent to thwart an attempt on the charmling's life. Dephne decides she has three things to do before she can die. Find out who killed her beloved grandmother, teach her BFF, Annette, the finer points of spellcasting before she blows up the world, and figure out how serious her relationship with the Adonis living in her basement really is. If it's heading in the direction she's hoping for, she can die happy. Though, admittedly, she'd rather not. None of that will matter, however, if she can't figure out how to foil the supernatural assassin who's been sent to kill her. Until then, it's business-and hopefully romance-as usual. Now if she can only figure out how to tame a lacuna wolf.

My top thoughts:

I have really been enjoying this series and this book has become my favorite in the series so far. Even though it had the trademark humor that I’ve come to expect from Darynda Jones, that’s not why I loved it. It delivered so much plot and character development that I was hooked – finished the book in 2 days – and I am eagerly awaiting the next book!

What I liked/didn’t like:

I don’t want to spoil anything, so this review is going to be a bit brief I think. Some questions we’ve been circling were answered finally, but a bunch of new questions emerged as well. We understand more about the magic and Charmlings… but now I have a whole new slew of questions that I can’t wait to see developed in future books. Nanette found this prophecy that has me all kinds of curious!! There was a TON of character development and things progressed quite a bit between Defiance and Roan.

This book ended on a bit of a cliff – not like a huge one, but OMG it was quite a final paragraph. Oh and I listened to this one (as always with this series) and I’ve grown to really love Traci Odom’s narration. I’m guessing she’ll be narrating the next book too, but it will be from Nanette’s perspective, so I’m interested to see how she approaches that change.

Narrator thoughts:

Traci Odom continues to deliver a fantastic performance for this series. She catches the personalities, especially the back-and-forth between Def and Nette so well. She catches the mood, which ranges from humor, sultry, and emotional, superbly.

I buddy read this with Sophia (she’s also giving it 4.5 stars) and we were both couldn’t stop once it got really going. So many questions and theories!Β 4.5 stars I loved it
