Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going.Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.
I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…
Share some of your favorite books written by Black authors or featuring Black characters
So I actually wrote pretty extensively on this topic last year. As a person of color, I think there’s an expectation that I love books with POC. And while I love supporting authors of color, I’m not particularly drawn to books with black characters — at least not where their blackness is a primary point of the book. If it’s incidental, I’m more likely to enjoy it.
That being said, I scoured the books I read last year to find see if I have some new favorites with black characters. As for authors, I have no idea what most authors race/ethnicity is (unless their name makes it fairly obvious), so I really can’t comment on it.
- Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann
- How to Catch a Queen by Alyssa Cole
- The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum
I read a different Alyssa Cole book. I enjoy the Talia Hibbert books and Farrah Rochon and Courtney Milan to name a few. I am sure there are more but I don’t always pay attention to that specifically.
Oh see Courtney Milan is one I like but didn’t realize she was black!
Over the past couple of years, I’ve made an effort to read more authors of color, so I’ve been more in-tune to the author’s race/ethnicity than I would have a few years ago. With that said, I still pick books I want to read before any other factor. Thanks for sharing some recommendations!
I keep saying I need to be more in tune but I’m not great at it. One of these days I’ll have time to do better!
I really wanna read Alyssa Cole!
I enjoyed How to Catch a Queen, it was different, but in a good way!
I need to pick up that K. Ancrum book. I loved her other book, and she’s hilarious on Twitter. More people need to follow her.
I really enjoyed it – it was my first read by her but I hope to read more. It was LGBTQIA+ which I also really enjoyed.
