Tell Me Something Tuesday is hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings. Check out her blog for upcoming topics! I saw a post by Jen (Twimom) and thought it was fun and decided to join in. So I’ll be jumping in sporadically 🙂
I’m once again posting a day early due to our blog schedule… be sure to check out everyone else’s posts tomorrow!
Do You Enjoy Anthologies?
Short answer: not really.
Longer, more complicated answer: it depends. If it’s a collection of stories from the same author and those stories belong to a series I already enjoy, I tend to love those anthologies. But I have to be in just the right mood to read an anthology full of short stories from a variety of authors. Why? I have no idea, since I have no problem reading short stories generally. I also really enjoy the Read Me Romance Podcast, which could easily be compiled into an anthology of shorts. So I like to read them and listen to them… but separately.
Perhaps it’s the time commitment? In my mind, it’s one book. This means I HAVE to read it all before moving on to something else… whether it be 3 or 4 or 10 stories. Whereas if I pick up one short story, it’s finished in a short amount of time and I can move on to something else quickly. In reality, I could do the same with an anthology… but I don’t seem to get that in practice.
Haha! I like how are answers are so similar, but so different! I do enjoy those kind of anthos (all one author) the best. But I do like the other kinds too. But unlike you – I am okay with reading one or two of the stories in an anthology – I don’t need to finish it if the other stories don’t appeal to me.
I have a few short story collections that I love and reread over and over but in general they’re not something I’m attracted to. In general I usually find them pretty uneven which I guess may be why I rarely pick them up!
I read anthologies! I used to work as an editor for them, so all the anthology hate makes me sad. I like anthologies, but I’ve never given one 5 stars because there’s always a few pieces that I dislike.
