Tell Me Something Tuesday is hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings. Check out her blog for upcoming topics! I saw a post by Jen (Twimom) and thought it was fun and decided to join in. So I’ll be jumping in sporadically 🙂
What’s the biggest mistake you made as a newbie blogger?
When I read this question one thought came to mind immediately… requesting and accepting ALL THE BOOKS. I signed up for every tour, requested so many books, and anytime an author emailed me about a book, I agreed to read and review it. Next thing I knew, I had something like 100 books to read and review and no time to read what I had purchased and wanted to read.
I did discover some great books through that phase, but I also put a lot of pressure on myself and if I had kept it up, I probably would have lost my love of reading & blogging. Now I do read a few books for review. Books I WANT to read and have personally selected. Every now and then a book I hadn’t considered comes my way and I do really want to read it, so I accept the review request. But that’s rare. There’s just too many books to put that kind of pressure on myself. Plus, if you accept it for review, you really should write a review in a reasonable amount of time. And I can’t count on myself to do that very often right now.
That was my answer for this too lol. Soon as I seen the question here I was like um went crazy on netgalley lol.
LOL I think we all do it. It’s so exciting to discover FREE BOOKS. and then you’re like, whoops! LOL
YES! So much this. I wanted to accept everything and sometimes I found gems and made “friends” with authors. But other times… I was up all night trying to read and write the review.
Yes. I remember one night in grad school I was up to 3 am reading then wrote the review and scheduled it for a 5 am publish time. And I had homework to do! Insanity ! I did find some gems, too, though.
Me, too! I’ve whittled the pile down, but my ARC pile was massive and I don’t want to do that again. I also made the mistake of trying to have a post every day even when I was burning the candle at both ends to do it. Not anymore. 🙂
Yes, this too! In fact, there was a point where I had multiple posts a day. I forgot about that. Now, I’m just happy to have posts sometimes lol
Yes I made that same mistake, I accepted so many books and some of them I still haven’t read and probably won’t ever read and just like Stephanie I still have some old netgalley books as well. I am happy I nowadays don’t request as many books and also keep in mind whether I can review the books I request at a reasonable time, else I try not to request it.
I went through and told netgalley I wasn’t going to get to the books – didn’t even have access to some of them anymore! I am so much more careful about review books now.
Oof. Same. I’m still working on some of those really old NetGalley reviews. I also was too focused on the book having to be perfection and probably really hurt some feelings.
I think everyone goes through the “all the books” phase at some point.
I think so too. I just told netgalley I wasn’t going to get to a lot of the books I requested. Some, I didn’t even have access too anymore! I haven”t requested off of netgalley in a couple years now.
