Today I would like to welcome on my blog
and her book Zodiacts – Aries Adventure-Camp on Camping on
Donna McGarry is a level one graduate of Steven Forrest’s Evolutionary Astrology Apprenticeship Program. To date, she’s written five books in the Zodiacts series. The books combine her love of astrology, dolls and myth. A self taught artist and avid ice-skater, she’s had a deep and lifelong love for the Moon, stars and heavens. She’s hoping that her vision of the skies encourages little ones to dream big dreams.
Zodiacts ~ Aries Adventure Camp on Camping On
by Donna McGarry
Paperback, 36 pages
Quirky, original, and baroque, Zodiacts by Donna McGarry is a series of unique picture books written for children which illuminates the qualities and characteristics of the twelve signs of the zodiac. In the first book, Aries Adventure: Camp on Camping On, the Zodiacts, a family of stars, travels to Mars for a non-stop camp-out adventure. Meet the gang: There’s Leo, a friendly, curious, sometimes lazy, but always fun star. He likes people to like him, he likes for people to be happy and he likes pancakes and his family best of all. Then there’s Starrkitty. She is a flamboyant, self-centered, stubborn, star-cat who more than anything else wants to catch a big fish. Finally there’s Andy Aries, Leo’s daring, adventurous friend who can get into trouble in a flash. Merging surreal visual imagery with melodic verse, this book will captivate both the beginner reader as well as the fanciful adult.
I am so glad we are able to sit down and chat today,
Thank you for agreeing to answer a few questions 🙂
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a nature freak. I love to be outside hiking, ice-skating, walking along the Hudson or star-gazing. I study astrology, and I’m a chocolate chip cookie glutton.
2. Can you tell us about the characters in your book?
My characters, the Zodiacts, are a family of stars. Each character is a an embodiment of an astrological sign.
3. What made you want to write a book?
I love astrology. Many people only know astrology by their Sun sign. I thought if I could create lively, whimscial characters who resonate with a particular zodiac sign, astrology would be easier to learn. Hopefully, it would inspire people to learn more.
4. Can you tell us a little about the characters in the book?
Starrkitty is a charismatic, regal, determined feline who loves to fish, eat and command attention. Leo is family-oriented, loves pancakes, is nosy, and romantic. Sally Sagittarius is adventurous, optimistic and a go-getter. Vinny d’Virgo a meticulous, people-pleasing chef.
5. How do you come up with the characters names?
Since the characters are archetypes of their sign, and the books primarily for kids, I use alliteration such as Andy Aries etc. Sometimes I go to the myths. The books are meant to explain how the Moon influences us as she moves through the zodiac constellations. So for the sign Gemini I used the names Pollux and Castor.
6. How long does it take for you to write a book?
About a year. I do the illustrations and self-publish, so it’s quite time-consuming
7. Do you have any advise for aspiring authors?
I like the ABC advice. Apply Butt to Chair. It works. Also, use an outline, don’t get distracted, and consider your marketing tactics before you write. They are not kidding when they say writing the book is the easy part.
8. Do you have a specific time during the day that you find better to write?
I try and get to it first thing in the morning, but if I can’t I’ll squeeze in work on an illustration whenever I get the chance.
9. Have you ever written a character and realized you just didn’t like he/her and had to change it?
If I’m not crazy about somebody at first, I usually end up loving them later.
10. What books are you reading now?
Now I’m reading ‘Separating Aspects’ by Armand Diaz. It’s illuminates the astrological factors planets play in break-ups and relationships.
11. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I love to frolic outdoors, peruse astrology charts with friends, read and I do like some HBO.
12. If writing your full time job?
If not what do you do? I read charts, waitress and jack-of-all-trades dabble to make ends meet.
13. When you read what format do you prefer to read in (Paper/Hard Cover or E-reader)?
I like a real book! I spend way too much time in front of a screen as it is. Although I will say my books on the IPad look great.
14. Can you share a little of your current work with my readers?
Currently at work on Zodiacts: Vinny d’ Virgo and His Venison Stew* *working title!
15. If you can recommend one book for someone to read what would it be? (not including yours)
I loved ‘Water Music’ by T.C. Boyle!
