Tell Me Something Tuesday

Tell Me Something Tuesday was hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings, but she has (temporarily?) stopped blogging. So a group of us that had been doing posts (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Karen from For What It’s Worth, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About  and me) decided to get together, come up with some more topics and keep the meme going.Michelle made us a logo and we’re off and running. For more details, check out this post where I reintroduced the meme.

I can be sporadic, but when I do join in I will always share next week’s topic at the end of the post. So, today is about…

Share your favorite romance moments: movie, book, story, etc

In honor of Valentine’s Day yesterday, we’re looking at romantic moments. As someone who reads a lot of romance, I have so many I could choose from. But there is one book that remains my all time favorite romance – and I love it in all its film versions as well. If you know me, you may have already guessed it – as I read the book at least once every year. The book is:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

There are actually quite a few great moments in this book. Some of them are quite famous, some less so. Here are some of my favorite moments, and I can’t rank them… it’s like ranking your kids lol:

  • Darcy’s first botch proposal. It’s horrible – he insults her – and yet that moment where he says “you must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you” always makes my choke up a bit. I think because I know where it’s going to end up.
  • When Lizzy is touring Pemberly, thinking he’s not there and he return unexpectedly. That whole scene – from his awkwardness, to the way he swoops in and is so generous with her aunt and uncle, to his finally letting his guard down with her. I just get all tingly.
  • When Darcy comes upon Lizzy after she’s just gotten the horrible news about Lydia. I don’t think many people would consider it romantic, but to me this is the stuff of romance. She confides in him in a way she never would most people, showing so much trust (and though she doesn’t realize it yet, love). And when he hears her pain, he’s moved to act in a way he normally wouldn’t. That’s love.
  • When Lizzy is thanking Darcy for what he’s done for her family, even though she’s not supposed to know it. And he replies “If you will thank me,” he replied, “let it be for yourself alone. That the wish of giving happiness to you might add force to the other inducements which led me on, I shall not attempt to deny. But your family owe me nothing. Much as I respect them, I believe I thought only of you.” I thought only of you. Swoon.
  • And then of course the end proposal, when he doesn’t botch it. “You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.” And the whole scene the follows, where they basically discuss how things have changed between them, how they’ve been falling in love. Such a great scene… maybe my favorite.

I should note that while I do love both movies, I have a very special place in my heart for the A&E Version starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. There’s just no other Darcy for me but Colin Firth. Now I want to go watch and read it right now!

What about you? Do you have a favorite romance?

Great post, Berls! Thanks for sharing. It’s been ages since I watched the movie (and I’ve never read the book!). I need to put the movie on my watch rotation again!
