So if you’ve followed my posts on Because Reading (or even back at Fantasy is More Fun) for a while, you know this girl doesn’t really read horror. I’ve ventured into the genre a handful of times – almost always as a book club read. However, I DO enjoy a good suspense and to me that qualifies as a good Spooky read. So here are my top Suspenseful Spooky Recs.
Book Recommendations for October that are simply Spooktacular!!
These were all 5 star reads that I would consider Thriller/Suspense.
You may note that I listened to all of these and I have to say the narrations definitely added to the experience. Here are the first few lines of each review, which I’m linking so you can check out the rest if you’d like.
The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware narrated by Imogen Church
Memory Man by David Bladacci narrated by Ron McLarty & Orlagh Cassidy
One by One by Ruth Ware narrated by Imogen Church
Honorable Mentions
These are all 4/4.5 stars. If you haven’t already picked up on a theme… Ruth Ware & Imogen Church make a fantastic pair and I’d rush to listen to ANY of Ware’s books if you like suspense. I have officially read all her books now. Many of these are series – I’ll note where I’ve read (and liked) the entire series.
Sin With Me by JA Huss & Jonathon McClain
This series (which I’ve read all of and rated each book 4 stars or higher) takes place in Las Vegas and is a mix of delightfully sexy, a bit of dark, and some tricky suspense.
Troublemaker by Linda Howard – I have only read this book in the series so far.
Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I never wrote a review for the second book, but I enjoyed both books. They're not SUPER thrillery but still sort of qualify.
My Beautiful Suicide by Atty Eve
This was a good series but not an easy one to read - it's DARK YA for sure. I found myself drawing frequent comparisons to the TV show Dexter. The narrators switched mid series, which actually worked, even though it did through me off.
In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
The Lying Game by Ruth Ware
I haven't published my review yet - I wrote on on Goodreads though. I'll get the review up soon hopefully. This was my second Ruth Ware and I loved the way she keeps you anxious and the way she uses setting as basically another character in the story.
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
I have not read the second book, yet. I do plan to. I am also looking forward to watching the show based on the book, it's on Peacock THIS WEEK and I plan to watch (maybe today).
I have only read one Ruth Ware and I didn’t like it so now I am author shy…lol. I need to try another one…lol. I do want to try One of Us is Lying especially now I see peacock as a series about it!
I love your version of Spooky reads. I’ve read almost all of these authors and many of these books!
I’ve had Ruth Ware books and the Linda Howard on the wish list forever. I need to get cracking on those.
I bought One of Us is Lying last week so I hope I can get around to reading it soon. I’ve been hearing many good things about it!
