News at Home: The Vitamin Jam

The highlight of this otherwise really good week was what I’m calling “The Vitamin Jam.” So after my surgery I was limited to chewable and drinkable medicines. For my vitamins I’ve been wearing this patch. My doctor said it was good for a first, but there’s no good evidence that it’s enough so he wanted me to switch to oral vitamins around now. And on Thursday, when my patch vitamins had run out, I did just that. Or tried to, at least. I took two capsules first thing in the morning (5:30am).

And things immediately got bad.

Not 10 minutes later – in the middle of my morning yoga – I had to stop and go throw up. But then I felt better, so I got back to life.

Then around 6:30am – I’m eating my morning yogurt (something I’ve never had trouble with!) and suddenly crap, I need to go throw up. But then I felt better, so I got back to life.

Then I’m at work, about 7:30am, and I drink some of my water. Before I go pick up the kids from the gym at 8:00, I need to go throw up. But then I felt better, so I got back to life.

And so it went, all day. I drank considerably less than normal, because I kept throwing up. But try talking all day on no water, no food. So yeah, I kept trying. And I kept throwing up. But then I felt better, so I got back to life. Sense a theme?

I finally messaged my surgeon’s Nurse Practitioner around 1:30, while the kids were are recess… while trying to find a spot to throw up outside that wouldn’t get trampled in by kids. I mean it was basically just water I was throwing up, with some foam, but still. After asking me a lot of questions, she decided to call me and put me on the phone with the surgeon (how amazing is my surgeon? To get on the phone with me like that?). Anyway he tells me that it sounds like my vitamins are stuck and nothing is actually making it to my stomach. And since it has no where to go, the only option is back up. But he tells me to keep sipping water because that’s the only way I’m going to dissolve those damn vitamins. And if it’s still happening Friday morning, I’m going to need to come in for an xray.

By this point I feel like total crap and thankfully my team was like, “go home!” So I got my kids to their dismissal point and took off, probably before a single parent had a kid in their car. And went home to sip water and throw up for hours. It was around 8pm, I believe, that I finally threw up some vitamin and was able to start keeping down water. And Friday I was fine. Didn’t throw up once. So yay!

Did other things happen this week? I’m sure. But all else was clouded by that fun FUN day. I seriously don’t remember the rest of my week. I do know it was a pretty decent one, otherwise!

Blog News

I’m working on getting a bunch of blog posts done today and HOPEFULLY I’ll actually get a chance to visit tomorrow. I do know we had a ton of meetings last week at school and that took away a lot of my work time, so I have more than the normal amount of work to do at home this weekend. Plus Thursday was SUPPOSED to be my late night, but then the vitamin happened. If I don’t make it, please know I love you all and appreciate you, even if I suck at visiting!

Oh and Michelle and I have our Can You Read a Series in a Month? Challenge starting in November. I hope you’ll join us!

#FitReaders Update

I’m going to start reporting the most important things I’m tracking right now – exercise/steps (goal daily yoga and at least 6k steps a day), calories (goal within 1000), and protein (goal at least 65g).

Here’s a rundown on my week:
Saturday: 10 min morning yoga, 2,047 steps; 778 calories, 42g protein
Sunday: 10 min morning yoga, 1,866 steps (had fitbit on charger a while today though); 514 calories, 30g protein
Monday: 10 min morning yoga, 9,115 steps + Body Sculpt Class (cardio + weight intervals); 452 calories, 53g protein
Tuesday: 10 min morning yoga, 9,221 steps + Cycle Class (Best 45 minutes of cycle I’ve ever had!); 549 calories, 67g protein
Wednesday: 10 min morning yoga, 8,001 steps + powerbelle class (barre on crack, as they say); 627 calories, 74g protein
Thursday: 10 min morning yoga, 5,427 steps; 32 calories, 4g protein
Friday: 10 min morning yoga (20 days without missing!), 9,433 steps; 589 calories, 90g protein
Days since surgery: 60
Total weight lost since surgery: 50.6 pounds
Weight lost this week: 7.2 pounds

Again, with the exception of Thursday this was a really good #FitReaders Week. I think I mentioned last week that I found this gym – through a coworker – that is 100% classes. And that’s what I like. They’re expensive and 15 minutes in the wrong direction (I have to drive past home when I leave work to get there), but I decided to do their introductory visits this week and I’m hooked! They have amazing instructors, the classes are intense (but totally modifiable) and the FEEL is amazing. I don’t feel uncomfortable being plus size – all shapes and sizes are in their working their collective asses of and cheering each other on. So yeah, looks like I’ll be budgeting a bit more for gym and gas!

Monday What I'm Reading Logo

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at the Book Date. And here we are!

I just finished…

I finished Sweep in Peace by Illona Andrews and I liked it a lot more than the first one, which I liked.

I also started and finished The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare this week. Gah! So good, I laughed so hard and snorted a bit too!

Reading Now…

I’m almost finished with Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs and it’s so SO good.

Also almost finished with Teaching with Love and Logic, literally pages away from finishing.

I just started the third/final? Innkeeper Chronicles book, One Fell Sweep by Illona Andrews.

Up Next…

Not quite sure…

How was your week? What are you Reading?

This week is all about the Vitamin Jam! Find out what happened in The Sunday Post with Berls Share on X

  1. Ugh that sounds awful! I’ve switched to gummy vitamins because the pill kind tends to make me nauseous and getting them stuck sounds unbelievably awful. Glad it got better and that your team was so supportive! Hope this week has less vitamin jams!

  2. OMG, what an ordeal! Glad it finally start to come up (and out) and you were able to avoid going in for an x-ray. But what a totally miserable day. Ugh!
Hope this week is much better, love!

    • Thanks Tanya! Yeah, it was not fun, but at least it didn’t end up being too serious. Hope you have a great week as well!

  3. I learned a while back that I can’t take vitamins first thing in the morning because it makes me throw up. If I wait till after I eat something then I am fine. Hope you have better luck with the pills, maybe cut them in half. 🙂

    Have a great week!

    • Yeah I’m never taking them again lol! I asked them if there was a chewable alternative. There is, apparently it tastes super nasty and I don’t care hahaha! I had to order them so I won’t be able to start till next week, but never again 🙂

  4. I’m glad you are feeling better Berls! That sounds awful but it’s great you have a supportive team at work and with the surgeon. The White Trash Zombie series sounds really good and I need to start that soon. I hope you have a good week!

    • Thanks Kathy! Yeah I’m really lucky to have so much support 🙂 it makes all the difference. You should totally read WTZ during out read a series challenge! It’s such a fast read.

      Have a great week!

  5. I’m glad that you’re feeling better Michelle, being sick is the worst! And I’m obsessed with counting my steps for the week too, I normally have to take part in workweek hustles, just so that I can motivate myself more! And what a wonderful challenge! There are so many series that I need to read, that I may have to sign up! I hope you have a great week! 🙂

    • Thanks Jasprit! I used to do work week hustles all the time, but I haven’t been lately, since my steps have been lower than they used to be. I’m going to gradually work my way back up. I hope you join us for the series challenge 🙂 have a great week!

  6. Your surgeon and medical team sound absolutely fabulous! Your day sound absolutely horrible. I don’t know how you can keep on after throwing up more than once. I’m glad it was nothing more serious. And that gym sounds awesome! I am intimidated going to gyms. I want classes, too, and there aren’t really many that do classes (offered at a variety of times) around here. Most of them are during day hours, while I’m at work. Your weight loss is going so well – keep it up!

    • I’m very lucky to have such a great team and surgeon – it took something fairly scary and made it not so bad. It was a really rough day – thankfully I just felt like a champagne bottle needing to pop, not really sick. But by time I went home I was super exhausted from it still.

The gym is great, I’m so glad to have found it. Yeah, it’s more money than I wanted to spend, but it’s worth it. This one has classes pretty much only in the early am and then starting around 4:30 – so they really cater to working adults. Hope you can find something similar! Have a great week 🙂

    • It was definitely scary. I was so worried something was going to be seriously wrong. So yeah, was very relieved when I saw that vitamin make its way up! Hope you have a great week Kimba!

    • It really did Greg lol! But I’m feeling much better and have been really relaxing today – a bit of work around the house but still in pj’s 🙂 have a great week!!
