The Couple and The Book…

Whenever people talk about time travel romances I automatically think of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Jamie and Claire Fraser are one of my favorite book couples and love stories. Claire Randall is a former combat nurse in 1945 on her second honeymoon in Scotland. She is thrown back in time to the year 1743 and meets a group of Scottish clan men willing to provide her shelter. In the clan is James Fraser, a young Scots warrior who befriends Claire and is willing to do anything to save her life. They marry in order to protect her and their bond grows from friendship into love. Diana Gabaldon has written beautifully two characters whose love overcomes the odds. Claire is a strong female character with a mind of her own. Jamie is loyal and over protective but despite the time period he treats Claire with respect and values her opinions. Diana Gabaldon created the perfect male character and Jamie Fraser is one of a kind. Jamie and Claire’s devotion for each other is heartwarming and their love is timeless.

Along with their romance is a historic journey. Because of the historic details the books in the series average 1,000 pages. This is a long series (the 9th book is currently being written) but it is filled with adventure, drama, history and romance that has me wanting more. If you need more convincing here is a trailer for the Starz Outlander series.  The show is incredible!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

  1. For the longest time (pre- blogging days) I’d see these books in the store and think they had cool titles- LOL. Drums of autumn, Dragonfly in amber- very evocative. Now of course I know what thy’re about, and they do sound good. Time travel is fun- and I wonder if she ever makes it home (or maybe she doesn’t want to LOL). Nice post!

    • It is long but its worth it. The first book does drag a little until she goes into the past (but it might be just because we know it is going to happen so we can’t wait). But once she does I got hooked on the series. I stayed up past midnight because I couldn’t put it down. I was a zombie at work the next days but it was worth it lol. I hope you get to read it sometime =)
