During the month of October, I asked a few of my friends, what their favorite Monster is (some are not so scary) and what book(s) they read that they loved that associated with the Monster they picked. The answers are great and the recommendation are even better! Enjoy!

Banshee
Bean sidhe (banshee) – a female spirit in Irish mythology who heralds the death of a family member, usually by shrieking or keening.
Perhaps a banshee might not seem so scary but I think I would be none to happy to be near when she started shrieking – especially if it was my death she was heralding. Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series revolves around just such a being. I didn’t have a particular affinity for banshees before reading this series. In fact, I’ve not read many books with banshees as characters but I adore Kaylee, her “gift” is fascinating, and this series is fantastic.

Kaylee is 16 when she discovers she’s a bean sidhe. Bean sidhes wail a death song when a person is dying and Kaylee’s wailing was chalked up to panic attacks until she meets Nash. Nash is a boy from school, who also happens to be a major hottie as well as knowing a little something about Kaylee’s wailing. When it turns out that Kaylee’s incidents aren’t isolated and young girls are dying, Kaylee and Nash set out to find the cause.
Each book in the series takes on it’s own plot line but there’s also an over-arcing plot throughout. More is learned about banshees as well as other paranormal beings. RVincent created a unique and entertaining mythology around her beings. And a robust cast of characters populates each of the books. There’s action, intrigue, suspense, and of course, romance in every single one. There’s also growth in the characters and their relationships with family and friends. The series is exciting and riveting.

I ADORED this series, which was my first read with Amanda Ronconi – I think it’s when I fell in love with Audio books too. I’ve had some ideas for writing a banshee series myself, I see so few, but I’m always worried my ideas are too similar or won’t be as good. Vincent did it so well!
I didn’t know you’d listened to this series. I started it while waiting for the next book in her Shifters series. 😉 Yeah, there aren’t near enough banshees around but Vincent did ’em proud. I’m sure you’d do the same. 😉
Ooh I love the idea of banshees, don’t know why, I just think they’re cool. I haven’t read any banshee stories tho? I’d like to find a really creepy one lol.
Great post Brandee!
You’ll have to let me know if you find more banshee stories, Greg. I’d be interested in them since I like seeing how different authors put their own spin on monsters. 😉
Nice pick Brandee, I love banshees as I grew up hearing stories about them! And I read a YA novel lately featuring one called Dare To Believe (it’s not published yet but you should keep an eye our for it.).
I love the sound of My Soul to Take so I’m making a note of it.
Thanks for the recommendation, Trish. I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for it. And I hope you’ll love what Vincent did with banshees if you decide to jump into the series. 😀
Never read this series though I always heard it was a good one. 🙂
Well, obviously I’m a fan. I think you’d actually like it, Stormi! 🙂
Thanks for letting me guest today, Michelle. 🙂
Yeah, I agree with Brandee! The SoulScreamers series is awesome, and it’s kind of sad that we know so little about banshees! *smooches both Brandee and Michelle*
Thanks, Lexxie! Isn’t it interesting that banshees are seen so little in lit? RVincent rocks though! *smooches* to you, wifey! <3
