four-half-stars

Miscast as the villain most of his life, Seth "Big Bad" Wolf never believed he would get his very own happily ever after—until he found it with Lavender Seelie, Cinderella's former fairy godmother and the Tale whose magic transplanted them from Make Believe to the ordinary human world. But now, as the holidays draw near, Seth senses something dark in the winter wind, something deadly that threatens the peace and happiness he's finally found. And one thing's for sure—whatever evil is coming to town better watch out, 'cause there's nothing Seth won't do to protect his family, even if that means unleashing the full fury of the wolf he keeps caged inside…

My top thoughts:

It’s been MONTHS since I last stopped in to share a review on the blog. But I signed up to share a review for Better Watch Out because I was so confident it would be great based on the previous books. I was not disappointed!

What I liked/didn’t like:

This was a treat for faithful readers, because instead of getting a new couple we get to revisit a favorite – Lavender and Seth. We’ve gone forward in time from the last time we saw them and they are now thriving as parents. I loved seeing them in this role and enjoyed seeing their interactions with their daughter. I thought it was great the way they were struggling (as all parents do, I think) with a loss of their former selves as they have become parents. Of course their former selves lived much more dangerous lives than the typical parent… so reprising their old roles out of necessity is a bit more problematic. Who’s going to watch the kid while they run off to save their fellow tales? And when it’s the children at risk and you are a parent, that changes everything. So yeah great tension in this one.

As always, Kate SeRine managed to combine some new baddies from the deep recesses of fairy tale lore with a twist. And somehow we still managed to get the reliable steaminess – this time between established lovers and parents, which is different than the new couple steaminess of most of her books. Ms. SeRine knows how to pack it all in — there was action, steaminess, laughter, tears, anxiety — all in a special holiday novella. Just in time for your holiday reading!
