My Review:

I have only read one retelling of frankenstein or at least when Dr. Frankenstein was a young man. The Monstrous Things is a retelling but done in such a different way that I found it fascinating and so interesting. I honestly loved the story however I wasn’t a fan of the Main Character. I had a hard time telling what actual age he was, I believe he was meant to be 17 but for some reason he came across to me as a 14 year old.

What I loved and did’t love;

  • The characters were ok, even with my issues with his age I found them to be interesting and really liked Clemence
  • The story is enjoyable but it starts off rather slow, I think I was expecting a retelling of Frankenstein but that isn’t what I got. It was a retelling but just done very different.
  • I wasn’t expecting Steampunk in this book however Alasdair was a Shadow Boy, these are people who help people who have lost a limb or had an injury in a war, they fix them with cogs and machinery inside the body. Of course there are a few people who think that the Shadow Boys are trying to be like god and they want all clockwork type people put away or killed.
  • When I realized what the story was about it really came together for me and made a lot more sense because I was looking for a certain retelling but what I got was something so unique, I loved it.

The Monstrous Things is a fantastic book, even with a few slow parts and my disconnect with Alasdair it still was a very good read. I recommend for Teens and adults, I really think you will be surprised at how this retelling is done.
