News at Home

The short version

I went back to the office and Dante went back to daycare after a year at home. It was a BIG adjustment for both of us, though positive signs are already showing. But also, Dante got sick and I’m spending my weekend with a sick toddler… will likely be home at least Monday and Tuesday next week. Read on for details.

Sunday

I spent today just getting ready for the work week There was so much to do, since Dante is starting daycare tomorrow and I’m back to the office. I meal prepped and organized and I think we’re ready though. I’m feeling really emotional and just hope things go well tomorrow.

Monday

Today went pretty well. My boss is letting me work 1 hour from home in the morning and 1 hour in the evening, so that Dante’s daycare day isn’t too long initially. I worked from 7-8 am, we left at 8am for daycare. Drop off went well enough, Dante didn’t cry and neither did I (thanks to a call to Michelle!). Work was slow *knock on wood* so I had a hard time staying distracted. I called to check on him once and they said he did well, a little bit of crying, but nothing more than normal for a first day. I had been so anxious about nap, but he napped well. He didn’t eat lunch, but he did eat breakfast and snack, so that’s good. When I picked him up he was playing on the playground and seemed happy. When he saw me he whimpered a bit, kind of a “you came back” whimper. I finished up work from home and got ready for tomorrow. I can already feel how much easier things will be – I ate healthier today and drank more water. Next week when I go to my full schedule, I’ll be back at the gym too. I even played a little bit of Sims while blogging before bed.

Tuesday

Dante did well in daycare today too. Drop off he whimpered a little, but no tears. When I picked him up (30 minutes later than yesterday – gradually extending it to a full day), he was playing happily and when we got home he played well too. Work is going fine and I today I setup my under desk elliptical that I’ve wanted for a while. I think it’s going to be a really good way to get in some exercise despite being stuck at my desk all day.

Oh and I’m taking care of my brother’s cat while he’s on vacation in NYC this week. He lives super close to work and on my way home, so it’s no big deal. Especially with all he’s done for us watching Dante!

Tonight I’m catching up on some reviews – I was so busy this past week that I fell behind and I don’t want to let it get out of hand. I think it will be much easier once I’m at my normal work schedule and get to take a lunch break, which I plan to use to do some blogging.

Wednesday

Today was a littler rougher. Dante woke up fussy and got pretty upset when we started getting ready – I think he knew what was up and wasn’t happy about it. Not that daycare is bad, but he’d rather be home (of course, it’s what he knows). And when we got to daycare there were real tears from the second we walked in the door. But I consoled myself that they were having waffles for breakfast and that would cheer him up lol! At pickup they told me he did pretty well; he’s adjusting. He breakfast and lunch well – no snack and skipped nap (which is nothing new). He went right to sleep tonight!

Work is… boring. I’ve been so busy for months and now I have hardly any meetings, very few things on my to-do list, and add to that the fact I’m in the office without Dante to watch and I feel like I’m killing time. I think I’m going to look into some continuing education courses through work I can take while things are slow, maybe better my chance at promotions later on.

Thursday

Dante did a bit better at drop off this morning. In fact, he woke up happy and was clapping (something I’ve been struggling to get him to do – daycare win already?). At drop of he did cry, but not until I handed him over to the teacher, so that’s an improvement. At pickup they said he didn’t nap – surprise? nope LOL! – but that he’s doing better everyday.

Work was better too. I was busy with a project and it made the day go by much faster. But boy, do I miss Dante. Buffy does too – when we get home everyday she goes crazy!!

Unfortunately, it looks like Dante is getting sick. Not unexpected, he hasn’t been around kids for over a year and wasn’t around them long enough before to really build up that immune system. But damn, not even a week?! He was running a low grade fever tonight. Gave him some Motrin and hoping he’ll be good in the morning. He can still go to daycare if he doesn’t have an actual fever, which is what I’d prefer. Let him get a full week under his belt before we stay home and confuse the routine.

Friday

Dante didn’t have a fever this morning and seemed like maybe he was feeling better, so off to daycare and work we went. Work wasn’t very busy but I did have more to do than earlier this week. At drop off he cried, but that was it. I look forward to the day that he realizes he has fun at daycare – as he clearly is having fun when I pick him up – and thus doesn’t cry. This evening the most amazing thing for just 1 week of daycare happened – Dante acted like he was trying to talk! He gave me a Mother’s Day Gift that they made at daycare (I’ll be opening it Sunday) and tried to tell me something. INCREDIBLE progress for just 1 week.

He doesn’t seem to be feeling too well though, running a low-grade fever again tonight. So we gave him so Motrin and it’s off to bed.

Saturday

Well Dante is MUCH sicker than we thought. Finally woke him up at almost 10 am and when we went in his room we were hit by the smell of vomit. Poor baby had thrown up while he was sleeping. It wasn’t there when I checked on him at 8, so sometime in the two hours when I heard him coughing he must have actually thrown up, though I couldn’t tell from the monitor. I thought it was vomit from coughing, but after trying to feed him breakfast and getting hit by a massive vomit spell, I determined that we have a stomach bug. Dante was lethargic all day today, napped from 3 – 5:30 (despite sleeping from 8:30 – 9:45am overnight) and proceeded to throw up twice at dinner time. He’s now on a strict BRAT diet (Bread, Rice, Applesauce, Toast), along with his gerber fruit pouches, water, and Pedialyte/Gatorade. We had to use a medicine syringe to get some fluids in him and i hope it’s enough. He doesn’t seem to be running more than a low-grade fever. And buggers abound. I highly suspect that we’ll be going to the doctor on Monday and that I will need to work from home at least Monday and Tuesday this week.

I hope everyone has a very Happy Mother’s Day – looks like I’ll be spending it nursing a sick boy. At least I’m guaranteed cuddles!

Last week on Because Reading

FitReaders (hosted by Jen @ That’s What I’m Talking About & Felicia The Geeky Blogger)

My big goal for 2021 is to get down to my goal weight. It means losing 70 pounds this year. This past week is the best I’ve done in over a year. As much as I miss Dante, I’m realizing just how hard this past year of working from home while watching him has been. I haven’t had spare energy to take care of myself.

This week I prepped all my food for the week on Sunday, packed it into my insulated bag and packed it into our work fridge on Monday. I didn’t go to the gym this week, since I was working early so Dante could have shorter daycare days, but still got in 10k steps most days thanks to my underdesk elliptical. And I’m down 4.6 pounds this week from last Sunday.

Weight gain/loss: -1.8 pounds from start of the year

I’m trying to be more responsible about keeping track of the books I acquire, so I’m going to start sharing them again. If I share them here, surely I’ll remember to add them to Goodreads, right?

How was your week? What are you Reading?

Sounds like the week was a win, even though poor guy picked up a bug. Great work on the meal planning, too. Hopefully this transition back to in-person work and daycare will continue to be fairly smooth.

  2. I’ve been waiting for this update all week! I see lots of positive things here for you and for Dante. I think you’re both likely to get sick a bit more often than being home though. Once he gets really playing there, maybe he will wear himself out enough to nap a bit. At first, it might be hard to sleep because he wants to watch everything happening. Happy Mother’s Day! I hope he is feeling better.

  3. That’s good to hear the transition from Dante to daycare and you working went well. Sorry to hear your work has been slow, it’s hard to keep focused when that happens. I hope you can find something you can do with the extra time. That’s awesome Dante tried to talk. Sorry to hear he got sick now and I hope he feels better soon. I hope you have a great week and mother’s day!

  4. Sorry to hear Dante got sick! That’s never fun. It’s nice that your boss is understanding of the situation to let you work from home a little bit to help him adjust to daycare. I hope Dante gets better soon!

Nice new reads! Some new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all! Happy Mother’s Day!
