This feature is for short reviews, reviews of books in a series where it might feel repetitive, or (as Michelle suggested) books I was too lazy to write a “real” review for. Today’s books were both written by Hannah Jayne and flow together really well – honestly they could be 1 book in my opinion.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

When vampire fashionista Nina LaShay's design contest rival is found dead, she's the prime suspect. Sexy photographer Pike is number two. He's the kind of man who makes Nina salivate. But will she have to reveal herself to him--and to save them both? Or does Pike have a secret of his own?
This was a quick fun read. I would consider it paranormal cozy mystery, which is a favorite of mine.
Even though it was a novella length audio, it was enough to give me a sense of the world – and it’s one I’d like to read more of. Nina calls the non supes “breathers” which made me laugh a bit. I’m curious about all the different sup types in this world – so far I know there are vamps (Nina) and shifters (won’t tell you, that’s a spoiler lol).
The mystery was fairly obvious, but for a novella length story it worked. I would really like to see some full length novels in this world, so that the mystery and characters could be better developed. But the story worked for me as a quick fun read and the narrator Arika Rapson delivered a good performance. I felt like she captured the characters well and the kind of ironic humor.

Vampire fashion designer Nina LaShay has a lot on her plate - just two days until fashion week and the model who was flirting with her photographer boyfriend is now a corpse in her studio. But when dead turns into undead and dangerous, Nina must find out who's responsible...before the beautiful baby vamp takes too many bites out of the Big Apple.
Contains mature themes.
It was lucky chance that I read this book after readingΒ High Stakes– but that is the absolute correct reading order, as this book picks up a few months after that one… I think? It seems like a few months, it’s definitely AFTER .
I see little reason why these two books couldn’t have been one. In fact, this book delivered a lot of what I was looking for in the last book. I see more character development and a better grasp of the paranormal world. I think I would have enjoyed the two books combined with a little more world and character development added in – that would have made one very solid 4-5 star book.
There’s something mildly ironically humorous about both books, which is a kind of humor I tend to enjoy. The fashion scene makes me laugh and at the same time I enjoy it… if that makes any sense. It’s just dumb and fantastic all at once.
I once again really enjoyed Arika Rapson’s narration – I think she delivers the characters personalities well. I really would enjoy a full-length novel in this world and hope to find one!
I feel the same way about a certain serial I’ve been reading. The flow and development would be much better and tighter if they were pulled into one. I like the sound of these. Glad to get your thoughts on them.
Sometimes I wonder what makes an author (or publisher?) decide to make two separate books instead of 1 in situations like this. They aren’t grouped as a series on goodreads, so I could have easily read them in the wrong order and that would have spoiled some of the first book.
I looked at these, the graphics and thought horror. still I’m not so much for cozy mystery.
LOL I can see why you thought horror – the covers do lean toward that. But definitely cozy.
These sound pretty good and it’s nice to have some short books that only take a couple of hours π
I do enjoy grabbing a short read periodically, just to squeeze in between longer reads!
