News at Home: COVID Quarantine Week 21

This week was EXHAUSTING.  On the plus, we’ve officially dropped Dante’s dreamfeed (bottle at 11/11:30 p.m. to help him sleep all night). He just wasn’t interested in it and Kiko was having a hard time waking him up, so we decided to try without it. He’s gone over a week now and has slept every night about 11 hours. WOOT! *knocks on wood* If he keeps it up another week, I’m going to talk to Kiko about splitting the weekend wake ups, since he doesn’t have to stay up late to do the dream feed anymore. It would be amazing to be able to sleep in 1 day a week!

So other than that, Dante has been challenging this week (which is really unusual for him). He suddenly stopped being interested in his bottles on Monday. I threw out so much formula because he was just not drinking it like he used to. He’s gone from 2 solid food meals a day to 3, which is great since at 12 months (about 6 weeks away) he’ll be transitioning to whole milk. But it threw me for a loop.

So Tuesday I was all ready to give him 3 bottles a day instead of 5 and he didn’t even want that. Baby was fussy. Crying and unhappy and just not himself. No fever. No symptoms. Finally realized he was teething bad. So did some Tylenol and Motrin and the fussiness stopped, managed to get 21 oz in him (he had been drinking 28-30 oz a day).

Wednesday he started off okay, drank a morning bottle good. Ate his breakfast and lunch. Managed to get him to drink a little bit of formula with his lunch. He napped well – which is amazing me. He has always gone to nap with a bottle right before to help him get sleepy. But always awake, so he’d learn to put himself to sleep. Well, now he doesn’t get a bottle before nap, he just goes to sleep no bottle! After his nap he had his follow up Dr’s appointment from his surgery. I was so anxious about this one appointment because we’ve been afraid that the surgery wasn’t effective. Turns out, he’s perfect and it’s just still healing and the stitch is making things look worse than they are. Relief!! After Dr. I managed to get him to drink another couple ounces. But at bedtime he did not want his bottle with me in the bedroom, like we normally do. Kiko gave it to him in the living room and we managed to get 6 oz down with a bit of begging. He only drank 17 oz all day… a full 10+ less oz than normal. So I was getting anxious.

Thursday morning he refused all but 2 oz of his morning bottle. I coerced him throughout the day and managed to get him to a grand total of 17 oz by bedtime. 2 oz here, 2 oz there. I was getting worried. He’s not quite old enough to be fully off formula. Friday morning he refused his bottle again and I called the nurse advice line at his doctor and they told me he needed to get in 18 oz a day typically to get the nutrients he needed. And he hadn’t done that since Tuesday… which in talking to them also happened to be the last day he had a bowel movement. Y’all he was constipated and that was why he didn’t want his formula!

So Friday we introduced the miracle of miralax, which is apparently harmless. And he’s been cleaning out and finally drinking! We’re still only getting in like 18-19 oz a day and Saturday night the last bottle was a bit of a fight. But it’s not as rough as it was.

On Saturday we also went to a friend’s house – also very strictly quarantined – and had a play date. Dante got in a baby pool for the first time and had a blast. I’m thankful to have a couple friends with kids who are being as strict as we are so that we have the opportunity to get together occasionally (last time was in June), because the kids really do need socialization. Especially for Dante, who doesn’t have young siblings at home, these moments are so special. Check out our wonderful time:

Oh and I’ve been continuing to binge watch Married at First Sight. I love the ridiculous show and I’m on season 10 now. We also watched a couple funny movies this week (we’re trying to watch a movie with dinner on Fridays and Saturdays – kind of replacing date night since that’s not happening in 2020). On Netflix we watched The Wrong Missy and then on Amazon Prime Video we watched All Nighter. Both surprised us and made us laugh a lot.

  1. Aww cute pool pic! Something about kids and water! 🙂 And yay for fun shows haha. I wasn’t watching anything for a while but now I’m starting to want to try some shows again.

Hope you have an awesome week Berls!!!

    • Why can’t we just be born with teeth? The teething is the worst 😐. I guess nursing moms probably appreciate the delay though lol!

      Have a great week!

  2. Poor buddy, glad you were able to work out the foot to bottle ration, the teething, and the constipation woes. Ah cute that he got to go swimming with a pal.

    Have a great week, Berls!

  3. What age do babies start eating solid food? I’m pretty sure my friend was letting me spoon gross stuff from baby food jars into her little girl around 4 months old. Maybe he Dante is sick of the same ol’ same ol? Ha ha.

    • He’s been eating solid food for months… Maybe since 4 months? He did the purees but since like June he’s been eating actual food. But he has to have formula for his nutritional needs until 1 year. I agree though, I think he’s bored and just wants the good food! Lol!

  4. yay for play dates….those are the best!!! Glad you had a fun time doing that. I miss the summer fun stuff we have had to do differently this year.

Hope you have a great week!

    • I know, I really hope we get have more play dates in the future. But we are so careful about making sure none of us have had any exposure for a couple weeks before getting together and that’s tricky. I think it will be a while before we’re able to do it again.

      Have a great week!

  5. That sounds like a rough week indeed with Dante not wanting to drink his formula. I am glad to hear you finally figured out what was causing it and that it’s going better now. And how fun he got to have a play date as their parents are strict with lock down too. Must be difficult for those young kids to not be able to socialize as much now with the lock down. And that’s good news about his surgery follow up appointment as well. I hope next week is a better one.

  6. In spite of the stress, it sounds like it was a week of great progress for Dante. My daughter stopped wanted to breastfeed at 9 mos to eat food like us and she never had formula. Could you put formula in a sippy cup so he could drink like big boy?

I’m always so impressed with how smart you are in handling things. You called the nurse line. You seem to figure out the best plan for things, not just Dante.

    • Did she switch to milk at 9 months? They tell me he’s supposed to be on breast milk/formula until 1 year. During the day we’ve started to switch to sippy cups for the formula and it sometimes works. I really think he’s just not interested in formula anymore, thankfully we only have a little time to go!

Hope you’re having a great week!

  7. So at 8 months Julia refused formula. We were also giving her juice at the time also. Since at 12 months she was switching to milk and the doctor wasn’t really listening to us when we said she stopped drinking it we switched her to milk and she went back to drinking milk. However she also gave up the bottle on her own also. She was always an independent kid. She still drinks a big glass of milk before bed. 🙂

WE BLOGGED!!! *High five* *fist pump* *happy Dance*

Have a great week, my friend! Happy Reading! xx
