How many times can a person escape death? Shelby Nichols may be one lucky gal, but this time, her luck is about to run out.
Working for a mob-boss has danger written all over it, but when an escaped convict with a lust for revenge goes after him, it’s up to Shelby and her mind-reading skills to keep Uncle Joey alive. Not only that, but a federal agent from her past has an agenda with her name on it, and he won’t take no for an answer. What’s a mind-reading soccer mom to do? If you’re Shelby Nichols, you jump in with your mind wide open and hope for the best.
Shelby just never lets me down. It took me a while to write this review because of surgery prep, surgery, and recovery – life just got a bit much for review writing. But I still vividly remember the story and that, as usual, I loved it.
What made this latest adventure with Shelby special? Let me count the ways…
- Shelby is starting to recognize and be okay with how enmeshed she is with Uncle Joey, mob boss. I think she’s struggled with this for a while and is starting to realize it’s okay. And since I love him, that’s a great development for me.
- The suspense! Not in a traditional suspense book sense… This is still a cozy mystery through and through. BUT there were some seriously suspenseful moments where I panicked a wee-bit. I was thinking, “Colleen wouldn’t… Would she?” Did she? Not telling, you’ll have to read it for yourself 😉
- I liked a development in regards to Shelby with her kids in this book. I don’t want to say what happened and spoil it, but I think it was a good development and will probably lead to some interesting moments moving forward.
- The ending with Uncle Joey and the police department! Can’t wait to see those developments in future books!!
Those were the big four things that made this adventure special, but of course it also had all the classic greatness of the series. Shelby getting herself into messes, being ruthlessly honest with herself in her inner dialog, Chris, Ramos, Dimples, etc. It was all there and great. And the narration continues to be good, and I would probably throw a fit if the narrator ever changed.
So why not a five, when I liked it so much? I just wasn’t always itching to continue like I am with a five star… Like anxious to finish what you have to do so you can get back to reading. I was always happy to get back to Shelby, but I wasn’t anxious and unable to put her down. So a really solid 4 star read and I cannot wait for more. Thanks to Colleen for always thinking of me when she’s looking for reviewers!
