Top Ten Favorite “Retro” RPG Games

BR~Top Ten

I am super excited about sharing this feature with you. In October I made a top ten halloween list and my son loved it so much he suggested I do it all the time. So I couldn’t say no to such a great idea from my super smart 10 year old. So here it is, each month or a few times a month I will give you a list of top ten things from books to movies to everything in between. I hope you will enjoy my top ten.

Do you play video games as a kid? I was a RPG fan, I had the Nintendo systems for most of my life until I got older and got the PS2. All of the games I played as a kid were RPG (besides games like Super Mario, those I loved too). I was reminded recently of how much I miss playing those games, my son received the Wii U from the awesome Santa and also got a retro game from him. It was one of my favorite games as a kid and I was so excited to have it again to play…hahaha my son was so excited to be able to play it. 😉 Just kidding, Santa really bought it for me. So I thought what a great Top Ten, I am going to share my FAVORITE role playing games when I was young. This was a hard list to make because the last 4 I wasn’t sure who I wanted at number 1, I was so conflicted but with a push from my son we figured it out…I think.  So are you ready to go retro?

My Top Ten Favorite “Retro” RPG Games

Please note one or two might be a little newer but are still “retro” to me 🙂

These three games I remember some of it but not all, I did complete all of them. Secret of Mana was a great game and the game play was a lot like Chrono Trigger. Breath of Fire and Lufia were more like the game Dragon Warrior.

Super Mario RPG was so different from any other Mario game but with the idea of still saving Princess Peach. I really liked this game and played it 3 times. I am hoping this is one of the game the Wii U will get also however I might be wrong but I think they already have it.

Sadly as much as I played more of Final Fantasy this was one of the only games I never finished. 🙁 I had such a hard time with the last coupe of bosses that I sort of bailed out but the graphics were GORGEOUS!

Dragon Warrior was one of the first RPG games I played and pretty much was the game that got me into RPG. I will always remember those pesky blue slimes sitting in the middle of the screen taunting you. The game a a few follow up games but soon it it became unavailable for purchase in the US. This was a VERY popular game in Japan.

Chrono Trigger is another game that I wish I could play right now. This game wasn’t like your standard RPG game, it gave a totally different spin on things but keeping with the RPG game style. This was and always will be one of my favorites that I will pray one day goes to the Wii U. I completed most of the RPG games, the end of this game made me cry because I hated to have it end.

Earthbound is the game that my son got for christmas. I wish I had more time to play it because the music in this game is like an acid trip. The graphics are super cute but tend to get all warped and the colors seriously makes you feel as if you were on drugs.

I had a hard time picking between Kingdom Hearts and Link. Link will always be my love but Kingdom Hearts was such a fantastic game and it was all about Disney and since I am a forever fan of Disney this was such a fun game to explore and travel to all the stories. My favorite was Halloween town.

I do love the first link game of the NES but Link to the past had so much more, it reminded me of the old flat screen RPG games were you move a little person around but the movement was more grid like than flowing. Plus if you hit the chicken with your sword enough a flock of chickens (are they called a flock?) will attack you and it’s hilarious. 🙂

  1. Great list and this is a fun post!! As a kid we didn’t have a game console (not even Atari – so now you know how old I am lol). So I didn’t start playing video games until I met my husband. For our Xbox I’ve played Dragon Age, Fable, and Tales of Vesperia. These were fun but since we have to take turns playing I gave up on video games. Now I just read and watch everyone else play.

  2. Oh great list! I am a big kingdom hearts and final fantasy fan as well. When I was a kid I played a lot of Mario and Pokémon. We got a nintento 64 and the first gameboy and we had a lot of games. I hardly ever finished any games though and Kingdom Hearts was one of the first games I actually finished. I own FF and FF-2 and a few of the later games, but only finished FF13 till the end. I think that might be my favourite FF game. I also have played a few Zelda games, but they were too difficult for me at the time, I always got stuck somewhere, partly because of the puzzles and partly because of my bad knowledge of english at the time. I had to follow someone “without being seen”, which is pretty damned hard when you don’t know what that means, lol.

    • I can’t wait for the new Kingdom Hearts, I feel like I have been waiting forever. I am a big Mario fan, my kids have a lot of the games, Mario Kart is my favorite but I HATE the rainbow bridge.
FF is very hard and you need patience and I don’t have any for that game. lol
I will be a forever fan of Zelda and want the new one.

  3. I haven’t played most of these because we never got the Super Nintendo, but I have played Link to the Past (along with most other Zelda games) and loved it! My favorite is Link’s Awakening though, the music in Zelda games is gorgeous but the Ballad of the Windfish would be on my life’s soundtrack if I had one. Kingdom Hearts is definitely one of my favorite games of all time, and it’s one of the few games I will play over and over and never get bored with it. Earthbound was one of my boyfriend’s favorite games. FF X-2 was a lot of fun too, until i get stuck..as I always do in FF games. The dressspheres are something they need to bring back, because I want to be all classes lol

    • My game console was Atari but after that it was Nintendo, I think I have always had it. I will have to look up the soundtrack because I love game soundtrack music.

Kingdom hearts is fantastic and I can’t wait for the new one to be released however I wish they would rerelease the other two as well. Since I haven’t played them in forever.

Earthbound is available on the WiiU, the music for that is great. I remember almost everything from that game 🙂

Same problem with FF I never finish them because they get way to hard and I get way to frustrated lol

  4. I am obsessed with The Legend of Zelda! I have almost every installment that has ever been, except for the Nintendo DS versions! I just ordered The Wind Waker for the WiiU and I am SO excited to get it and play my brains out! Your other picks are awesome too; I adore Mario anything as well! Happy gaming! 🙂

    • I am DYING to play Wind Waker told my kids they can get it for me for Christmas 🙂 I did plan the DS version it was fun just like the old game play style. The WiiU has this Zelda which I want to get. Mario is awesome I wish the WiiU had this game in it’s retro game section. I would love to play it again.
